Hey there ….It must have been very exciting to adapt with the development and the positive changes that social media have brought in our lives. Social media has increased the swiftness of spreading the word and effective interaction in public relations; however that has inconvenienced the profession of journalism. I don’t think we still need journalist as public relations practitioners in the age of social media. Social media  have made our lives in public relations profession very easy, interactive and it has created us an interactive two-way- communication platforms . Today public relations practitioners do not need to go through the long route when trying to reach their target audience. It might be to spread information, advertise, or sell their company or product to their consumer. It’s easy these days we just set behind our computers, laptops, or get glued on our phones and iPads then spread the word, sell, invite, have a chat with our consumers friends, colleagues etc.. lets take a look at how social media has impacted journalism. LETS PROVE IT  http://goo.gl/DuL8P1

SOCIAL MEDIA  OR  JOURNALISTS

WE TWEET IT                                                            JOURNALIST ATTEND MEDIA CONFERENCE

WE WATCH IT ON YOU TUBE                              JOURNALIST GO TO THE SEEN TO TAKE PICTURES AND VIDEOS

WE PIN IT ON PINTEREST                                     JOURNALIST PLACE PHOTOGRAPHS IN A NEWS PAPER

WE SHARE IT ON FACEBOOK                               JOURNALIST WRITE ARTICLE FOR NEWSPAPERS
WE CONNECT ON LINKEDLN                              JOURNALIST ADVERTISE JOBS IN NEWSPAPER

You must have witnessed the power of social media with your own eyes on the 8th of August this year, when earth quake occurred in Northwest, Mpumalanga, Botswana, Gauteng etc. It just took a minute to have the news running through the social media .within a second after the earth quake stopped news with evidence of photographs was already running through various social media platforms. That could have cost journalists time, transport, equipment, interview, different sources and a lot of money to gathered and get those news running for us. We have became our own news generators hence we are now called  pro-summers of news.  You walk around; campuses, malls’ taxi ranks, parks etc. You will find people smiling, frowning and blushing with their phones or iPads while spreading the word, so do you think we still need journalist? NO... .Come on... you know get what i am talking about.  WINK

  1. So true, social media has and is slowly taking over from journalists. It only take seconds to compose a 140 character tweet about an event that takes place at the moment but with journalists they will have to wait for deadlines and sunrise for newspapers, magazines etc to be published for people to know about news that happened before we even slept. Online newspapers and magazines are becoming more of a success than print

  2. Precisely....... i am glad that i am not the only one who's aware of this precious life that social media has brought in our lives. imagine who can still wake up to get a newspaper from a store or a garage , were else you can still get those news while you in bed or enjoying your breakfast in the morning. looking at the way social media is taken over the profession of journalist i wonder what else it can reap off in the near future of PR

  3. Indeed social media has taken over the journalism profession. It has opened doors to people being their own journalist and not having to rely on journalist to decide what is news and what is not, I totally i agree with you Nomvula.

    1. Kuhle, where have you been? how does social media needs journalist for ground breaking news? are you saying that you need journalist to become a pro-sumer?, remember that journalist serve as secondary source while you are a primary source? it has been said that news are better form the horse's mouth

  9. to be honest i agree with the fact that profession of journalism is becoming an old age story to our ears and eyes they only exist at their department and offices. the question is do journalists still have a chance in this web 2.0 age?

  11. I couldn't agree with you on this one Nomvula. I think Social Media has surpass Journalist. The thing is with Social Media is interactive in comparison to journalism because we can share statuses, re-tweet each about the same topic. It keeps us in conversation with each and the fact that we can log-in anywhere at anytime that is even nicer, rather than buying stake of newspapers!

  13. Who still need journalist while the world is full of citizen journalist. I have to agree with you Nomvula studying a journalism degree these days is counted as a risk, because social media is taking over, and there is nothing journalist can do because technology update itself everyday.
